Clovis

Clovis
(d. 511)
   Monarch.
Clovis was the son of Childeric I and he himself became King of the Salian Franks in 481. His wife, St Clotilde, was a Christian, but Clovis became a member of the Church only after he was convinced that Jesus Christ had intervened in battle on his behalf in 496. Clovis greatly expanded his kingdom and, after defeating the Visigoths in 507, the Eastern Emperor conferred on him the title of Proconsul. With the support of the Emperor, and with his new Christian allies, he was able to establish a system of law within his dominions. He made Paris the capital of France and is generally regarded as the founder of the modern French nation.
